My friend “Rabia” invited me to accompany her to the “saloon,” as the people here call it and often spell it. Because African hair is so delicate, Rabia leaves her hair-washing to the professionals, and therefore visits her stylist fairly frequently. The stylist began by rubbing a softening cream into Rabia’s hair and letting it sit for perhaps 20 minutes. Then the hair was gently washed and set with curlers.
The entire process took the better part of two hours, so I watched the other customers with interest, especially the one who was getting hair extensions attached. It’s amazing to watch a woman with no more than an inch of hair all around get transformed into a long-haired individual!
Next time you hear an African woman talk of her visit to the saloon, don’t be too shocked. ;)
